How do you beat The Deserter in Control Resonant?
On this page
The Deserter is the second Resonant boss, sealed inside the furnace room of the Patterned Factory in Central. It is the first boss with a real healing phase, and the first that turns the floor itself into a weapon. The fight is short once you know the loop: clear the underground pipe route, keep moving when the floor panels heat up, and destroy every purple healing sac.
Where to find The Deserter in Central (The Central Resonant)
The Deserter is the boss of The Central Resonant, the main-quest objective for Central. From the Central Field Office, head north until you reach the Patterned Factory. Outside the entrance you will find the Report Patterned Pipes prompt — report it to put the mission on your log and mark the route ahead.
Looking for the subway calibration instead? The Factory Station reroute puzzle belongs to Power Lines, a separate objective from this factory boss.
Is The Deserter optional or required for story progress?
No. The Deserter is The Central Resonant, and beating it is required to advance Contain the Crisis and to unlock the Thermal Termination trophy. You can leave Central to upgrade or finish other activities first, but the main storyline expects the kill before you move on.
Beating it also resets and levels the open world. Finish the zone activities you still want before the fight.
How to enter the Patterned Factory (powered door vs roof)
You only need one entrance. They are alternatives, not steps of one checklist:
- Powered ground entrance. Follow the yellow conductive structure outside and restore power to open the front doors.
- Roof. Break in through the roof if you reach that way first.
Pick whichever you reach first.
Once inside, clear the floor and look for the red cargo lift. Ride it down first — the heat growths are all in the underground pipe area below, not on the factory floor.
How to clear the three heat growths before the furnace
The furnace room is blocked by three glowing heat growths wrapped around the factory's pipework. Break all three, in any order.
Heat growth 1: main hall vertical riser
The first growth clings to the vertical pipe riser in the underground main hall, near the bottom of the long stairs.
Heat growth 2: red-lit side room
Take one side branch and look up: the second growth sits on the overhead pipe in the red-lit room.
Heat growth 3: far branch archway
At the end of the other branch, the third growth blocks the way in front of a round arch.
When the third growth bursts, the objective updates to Go Deeper Into the Furnace Room. Head back to the cleared furnace entrance and follow the stairs down — the boss intro starts as you approach.
These three heat growths only open the route. They are not the purple healing sacs in the boss arena.
What to equip before fighting The Deserter
If you want an optional health pickup while exploring Central, the Central laundromat puzzle leads to a Health Upgrade Point. It is not required for this fight, and one point only raises maximum health when it completes a set of three.
Best artifacts and talents for environmental fire
Nothing here is mandatory. Two menu items match this arena:
- Badge 11-60 reduces damage from environmental hazards. The Deserter's floor fire counts as that.
- Extended Rush makes your Rush last three times as long, so one dash covers more ground when a panel under you lights up.
A burn-resistance artifact such as the Lighter is a reasonable extra if you already own it.
Weapon form recommendations: building high Falter
Bring whatever carries your highest Falter numbers. A hammer-type Crush is the safe default. Do not respec for this fight. The fire abilities often recommended against The Deserter are the reward for beating it, so they cannot be part of your first attempt.
The Deserter boss fight: attacks and punish windows
The Deserter is a walking furnace: everything it does either tracks you across the floor or sets part of it on fire. Your job is to keep moving sideways, punish the obvious tells, and never stand your ground for a full combo.
| Attack | What you see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lava spew | A stream of molten rock tracks you along the ground | Strafe sideways until it stops; watch the burning patches it leaves |
| Slam and weak point | It rears up, then falls forward | Dodge the fall, then hit the purple point on its chest before it retracts |
| Pipe stab | Glowing pipes line up in front of it | Leave the front line; the pipes stab straight down ahead of it |
| Fireballs | A volley of projectiles with burning landing zones | Keep moving and watch the markers, not the boss |
| Burning floor (late) | Floor panels glow and breathe fire under melee range | Hit in short bursts, then jump or Rush out |
Lava spew: outrunning the molten tracking stream
The opening move tracks you in a line. Do not back straight out of it. Run perpendicular to the stream — it is persistent but slow to turn, and pure sideways movement beats it. Watch the burning patches it leaves on the floor.
Body slam: dodging and hitting the purple weak point
This is the punish window. When The Deserter rears up, it is about to fall forward. Get out of the line. As it lands, a purple weak point shows on its chest and neck. Hit that point until it folds away. It will not expose itself on every slam, so treat each one as a bonus window, not the plan.
Pipe stab: recognizing the front-line glow
When the pipes in front of it start to glow, they are about to stab down in front of the boss. Leave the front line. Slide around to a flank when the glow starts. The pipes stab straight down ahead of it.
Fireball volleys and the late-fight burning floor
From mid-fight on, fireball volleys add landing markers. Watch the markers, not the boss, and keep moving. Later, the floor under melee range starts to glow and spit fire. Stop standing in one spot. Use short two-to-three-hit bursts, then jump or Rush out before the panel ignites.
How to stop The Deserter from healing
This is the mechanic that decides the fight. Partway through, The Deserter steps back, four purple sacs rise around the arena, and the floor pipes start breathing fire.
How the purple healing sacs refill the boss health bar
While any sac is still up, the health bar visibly climbs. Stop hitting the boss and deal with the sacs. The bar keeps recovering until they are gone.
Sacs first, boss second: optimal arena route
The moment the sacs appear:
- Run the edge of the arena.
- Break every sac you can reach. Each one you destroy visibly knocks the regained health back down.
- When the sacs are gone, the phase ends and the fight returns to the normal loop.
Sacs first, boss second. The sacs are arena objects. They are not the three heat growths you broke on the way in.
Ignite vs Inferno: which reward should you choose?
Beating The Deserter sends you to the Gap for a choice between two fire abilities. The figures below are the menu numbers at the moment of choice — both scale with your Ability Strength, so expect yours to differ.
| Ability | What it does | At Ability Strength 2 (131%) | At Ability Strength 1 (105%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ignite | Adds fire damage and Burn buildup to melee, Barrage, Shield and Volatile Anomaly; drains Power while active | Bonus Fire Damage 20–39, Bonus Falter 5, Power 150 + 45 per second | Not selected on that recording |
| Inferno | A self-contained wave of fire that builds Burn | 158 Fire Damage, 13 Falter, Power 200 | 126 Fire Damage, 11 Falter, Power 200 |
Ignite breakdown: weapon enchantments and Burn buildup
Choose Ignite if your damage comes from melee, Barrage, Shield, or Volatile Anomaly. It adds fire damage and Burn buildup to those tools while it drains Power. At Ability Strength 2 (131%), the menu shows Bonus Fire Damage 20–39, Bonus Falter 5, and Power 150 plus 45 per second.
Inferno breakdown: self-contained fire wave burst
Choose Inferno if you want one cast that throws a fire wave on its own, with no setup and no upkeep. At Ability Strength 2 (131%), the menu shows 158 Fire Damage, 13 Falter, and Power 200. At Ability Strength 1 (105%), the same ability reads 126 Fire Damage, 11 Falter, and Power 200.
Can you change or respec your ability choice later?
Yes. The vendor sells a Reset Item for 5,000 Source that resets Combat Abilities in the Gap. Fire is also the answer to the Mold-heavy areas ahead, so either choice pays off immediately. For the Park’s mold collection and boss fight, follow The Park Resonant and The Collective walkthrough.
With the factory quiet, the rest of Manhattan's bosses open up. The full order and every reward are in all bosses, and if this was your first Resonant, our first-steps checklist shows what the reset world now offers. For the boss before this one, see The Artist.
FAQ
No. The Deserter is The Central Resonant, the Resonant boss the main quest log tracks for Central. Beating it is required for the Thermal Termination trophy, and the main storyline expects it before you move on. You can postpone the fight while you level the zone and upgrade, but plan to come back.
Midway through the fight, The Deserter steps back, purple sacs rise around the arena, and the floor pipes start breathing fire. While the sacs are up, its health bar refills. Drop whatever you are doing and break every sac — each one you destroy visibly cuts the health it regains, and the phase ends once they are all gone.
Choose Ignite if most of your damage comes from melee, Barrage, Shield or Volatile Anomaly: it adds fire damage and Burn buildup to those tools while it drains Power. Choose Inferno if you want a self-contained fire wave that costs one larger chunk of Power per cast. The numbers scale with your Ability Strength, and a vendor Reset Item lets you change your mind later.
Three: one on the vertical riser in the underground main hall, and one in each of the two side branches. You can break them in any order. When the third one bursts, the objective updates to Go Deeper Into the Furnace Room and the boss arena opens.
Badge 11-60 reduces damage from environmental hazards, which covers the burning floor. Extended Rush makes your Rush last three times as long, which helps you leave fire patches. A burn-resistance artifact such as the Lighter is another good pick. Bring your highest-Falter option — a hammer-type Crush works well — but nothing here is mandatory.
